Here it is, my first guest article. Thank you Mariann for sharing it with us.

Hi There,

I just wanted to write you about a great pregnancy exercise class
called Birth Energetics in Zürich.
I have been attending the Birth Energetics class since I was 20 weeks
pregnant (I am in the 32nd week now). The class is wonderful! We do
a lot of stretching, breathing, back, pelvic floor and spine exercises
which helps so much especially now that my belly is getting very heavy.
The class also helped me to meet other English speaking, new “mom to-be”-s;
in fact last week we had our first Pregy-dinner outing.
Carol (the instructor) is very helpful; she provides a lot of useful
information about other classes, having a baby in Switzerland and she listens
to your individual needs during class.
I can certainly recommend this class to everyone.

We have attended Mary’s lessons. All I have to say is that she is doing a very good job, filling Jane’s shoes (Jane has years of experience on this course but she is taking a leave until September) is not an easy task. She is a very sweet woman as well.

Swiss Swimming Songs

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Since our swimming course started, I have been curious about what songs our instructor was singing. She uses songs in Swiss German, and after a couple of months, I have finally the basic lyrics which I post here just in case you would like to take a look.

If you are familiar with songs in English, you will be surprised by the second song which is a translation on Swiss German modified for swimming.

Räga

Räga Räga Tröpfli, äs rägnät uf mis Köpflie, wenn´s rägnät werdät Blümli nass und alli Steindlich uf dä Gass!

Sind ihr glücklich und ihr wüssäd (If you are happy and you know it!)

Schau Schau Schau

Schau schau schau, sbädälä isch jetzt vorbi, alli alli gönd jetzt hei schau schau schau!
Schau schau schau, alli mitänand, alli alli gönd jetzt hei schau schau schau!

Alli Chindä

Alli Chindä gönd jetzt hei, alli Chindä alli!
Hüpfä, plantschä im Wasser si,
das isch für hüt scho wieder vorbi.
Alli Chindä sind jetzt müd, ali Chindä ali!

Sing and Sign

Sing and Sign, Switzerland

As we have attended just one class, I will write for now a temporarily review. It might change as the course progress.

Advantages:

I found out that this course is actually very popular among mothers with babies and toddlers. So, it is a very good chance to meet mothers and babies.

The class is also very engaging as the instructor makes it very fluid.

Several mothers that had taken previously the course enrolled again as they though it was a very nice course.

Disadvantages:

I could notice my baby got distracted by the middle of the class. Also, I was told by some mothers that had already taken the course that younger babies are not that interested in the signing as toddlers, so you might wait for this course if your baby is still under seven months.

Gymboree, Play and Music

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Gymboree Play & Music, KinderCare AG, Küsnacht (ZH)

Advantages:

The installations are very well designed for babies and little children. This children care facility is very well equipped with all kinds of toys, mats, play things that can be paradise to any girl or boy.

The instructors are professional and are asked to meet a schedule for every class, so you don’t see any improvised session. Specifically, the instructor that we had seems to care about every baby of the class, so for example my baby feels at home there.

Disadvantages:

The location can be a problem if you don’t live near Küsnacht. We have to travel around 40 minutes to get there which of course it is not very practical when you have a baby.

When the class gets top overcrowded, your baby or child might not get all the attention from the instructor, but this is always a common problem in any full class.

Baby yoga

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Baby Yoga, Birthlight Zürich, Grüngasse 21, 8004

Advantages:

The baby yoga course helped me to lose fear of how to carry my baby. At the beginning, I was very afraid that my baby will get hurt very easily by the way that I carried her, that I would not dare to explore different movements than the conventional ones.

I found out that she actually loves some of the exercises that you learn on this class and help her to sleep profoundly because she gets exhausted.

Disadvantages:

Since the class is divided half time for the mother doing yoga, half time for the baby and mother exercises, the baby might get very easily bored during the first half hour.

The instructors that we have contact with sometimes seem to forget the main purpose of the course which is to bring mothers and babies together by doing yoga. They tend to focus in financial matters such as making sure every one paid their fees and seem to get annoyed when someone asks them for information outside the class.
